The Broke Photographer

Who am I?

I am a middle-aged husband, father, professional (not a photographer), and an academic.  I have a mortgage, student loads, kids who do stuff that costs money, and bills.  So, I don’t have a ton of money left over each month to travel the world and take photos with expensive equipment.  But, I have a passion for good photography. In fact, I think about it all the time!

I am going through a bit of a mid-life crisis, so I need a creative outlet.  I have enjoyed what I would call “snap-shot” photography my whole life; now, I would like to take great photos without breaking the bank.

Why am I doing what I am doing?

I have learned along the way that you don’t have to have a ton of money to enjoy photography, capture, and process photographs of which you would be extremely proud.  You don’t have to own expensive cameras, lenses, and gear.  You have to have neither a degree in fine arts nor expensive training to take incredible pictures that you would be excited to print and hang over your fireplace.

To take great photos as an amateur, you have to know the fundamentals of photography and be enthusiastic about this wonderful art. You have to be willing to invest your time and challenge yourself to change to become a great photographer. My hope is that you and I can grow as photographers through this blog and create a community of photographers who capture, create, and appreciate this thing we call life through this blog.

So, I am taking photos and blogging about my experiences. And, because I am an academic by profession, I hope to pass on something that would be beneficial to someone else like me! I hope you will join me on this journey!
